Not everyone has the perfect ability to remember all of the necessary information and thoughts on the spot… and that’s why a lifestyle journal, or also known as a bullet journal is a must-have for everyone looking to have an organized life!
As someone that easily gets overwhelmed with time management, starting a lifestyle journal has helped me a lot. I use it for almost everything, daily tasks, moods, birthdays, calories, spendings, and more!
But the hardest part in starting was figuring out exactly how I could approach journaling and today we’ll tell you exactly what tips have helped me become a pro at journaling!
How to start a lifestyle journal
Step 1: Choose your preferred way to journal
Before you decide to start your lifestyle journal, it is important to have something to write in that’s comfortable and easy for you. Today there are tons of different apps ways you could create a journal!
People use some apps, sites, or just a traditional planner. It all just depends on your preference and whatever you’ll find more flexible to use. There are pros and cons to both traditional and digital journaling.
While traditionally you could make everything personalized and not have trouble with writing whatever you want, the digital one is faster to use, since we have phones with us at all times.
You may also consider doing it the old fashion way. Go to a book shop and buy a bullet journal. Instead of just blank, lined pages, a bullet journal contains sections:
- keep a monthly or weekly calendar
- to log daily to-dos,
- jot down notes
- track both physiological and mental health
- plus record both short- and long-term goals.
Step 2: Set intentions
Before I learned how to lifestyle journal, I never really knew what it would be useful for. I never really had an actual need to have bullet journals and even when I had, I just use it for the wrong ones.
Setting an intention is an important part of journaling since it’s your driving force for continuing to write in your planner. Your intentions could be just staying organized through your life, losing weight, achieving your career goals, all at once or more!
Step 3: forget the rules and start!
Lots of times we tend to get lost in the rules and the “rights” and “wrongs” of doing something. This may get us even more confused, unmotivated, and angry.
Instead of trying to follow some different rules of journaling, try making it more and more comfortable for YOU! There are tons of different ways to journal and you just have to find the one that suits you. This will take off the anxiety of messing up off your shoulders and make planning a lot more fun to do!
How do I use my planner?
Just like we said earlier, everyone has different reasons for using bullet journals and it is important to find yours too! Bullet journaling could be useful for almost everything in your life!
You can use it to keep track of your schedule, ideas, goals, fitness routines, activities, and more. It all depends on what you’re trying to achieve using this journal.
Here are a few ideas of what you can keep track of and write in your planner!
Schedule and task list
This section usually takes up the first page of my planner. I write out my months and then write about some important if there’s an important schedule, birthdays, things that matter, holidays, exams, and more!
As a forgetful person, this section of my journal has been a lifesaver!
Every day I track my mood using some sort of color. Blue meaning sad and green meaning happy!
One of the best things about this section is that at the end of the year, month, or a week I can look at it and see how much my mental health has improved or worsened. It is a nice way to know at what times I need to take it slow and focus on my health.
Workout and fitness tracker
If you’re trying to get in shape, then this section is great for you! For this section, I write my goals and what my body looks like at the start.
Then I write out my month and cross off the days where I did my workout and write exactly what kind of workout I did on that day. This way I can easily keep track of my progress and be more motivated to continue!
This is one of the most useful sections in my journal and had helped me keep track of my spending a lot!
In this section, what I make sure to write is:
- What’s my monthly budget
- what’s my monthly shopping list
- What are some vital costs?
- The money I’ve spent and what I’ve spent it for
- The money left at the end of the month.

This Meal Tracker section is great if you’re meal planning! Writing down all the meals that you can make for the week will save you a lot of time during grocery shopping and is also a great way to track your eating habits.
Just like the fitness and workout tracker, if you’re trying to lose weight, then this calorie tracker section will be pretty useful for you!
Calorie tracking is a great way to easily lose weight only if it’s done right. It is important to track your calories healthily and never let it become an obsessive thing.
The Goals section can be a reminder and a motivator for what you’re trying to achieve! You can get creative with it! write down all your important goals, write in some inspirational quotes, add pictures, doodles, stickers, and more!
It will be also a great memory to look back on in the future when you’ve already achieved your goals and have moved on to do greater things!
Track your thoughts and feelings
I always make sure to dedicate a page from my notebook to my thoughts and feelings. Mental health is just as important as your physical health and writing down whatever I’m feeling on a tough day is a great way to clear my mind.
Also, writing down your emotions can make them feel more real and important! This also goes with some positive feelings, since it is just as important to remember your happier days, as it is with your less fortunate ones!
