Are intermittent fasting diets healthy? Whenever somebody speaks about this type of eating pattern, this is the first question that is always asked. Before I start to talk about its benefits, I want to say that intermittent fasting does not prohibit any type of food, it only preaches about when should we eat, and as a matter of fact, IF causes weight loss due to its nature.
Are Intermittent Fasting Diets Healthy?
What if I told you, that Harvard research reveals how intermittent fasting might slow down the aging process, lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. It turns out, that insulin levels drop whenever we are not consuming any food; While being on IF these levels decrease so it can release stored glucose as energy, and this is exactly what we need in order to lose weight!
“Feeling Hungry Is Not Right”
Eating 6 times a day is more “not right” than hunger. You have to give your body a rest for your insulin levels to lower. The feeling of hunger might last for about 4 days, as your body will get used to a new way of eating in a short amount of time. Each day, your “diet” will get easier. Asking yourself- are intermittent fasting diets healthy- is absolutely fair, as you have to do a major research before you decide to take on a diet.
I recommend starting with the easier type of intermittent fasting, like 13/11, when you have 13 hours of fasting window and 11 hours of eating, and work your way up to 16/8 version. Listen to your body, and if you feel like IF does not work with your lifestyle, then you do not have to do it!
Intermittent Fasting Doesn’t Mean Starving Yourself
A lot of people who ask “are intermittent fasting diets healthy” imagine this pattern of eating as if its followers were starving themselves, which is completely false. For example, when I say 13 hour fasting window, the hours of sleeping also count in this window, as your body does not eat or drink anything while sleeping. Besides that, IF only limits you with your timing, not with your food choices.
Intermittent Fasting Is Not For Everyone
Are intermittent fasting diets healthy? It is, but also depends on the target group of people we are talking about. Even though intermittent fasting almost has no side effects, some people should not attempt fasting.
People with any history of eating disorders(bulimia, anorexia, etc..) should not attempt taking on this diet, as they limit their food consumption below healthy amount and adding fasting on top of that might be super damaging to your body! If you still want to attempt fasting, do it under close supervision of a doctor. Besides people with eating disorders, pregnant and breastfeeding women should also not take on this diet.
How Can I Make Intermittent Fasting Healthier?
Intermittent fasting is already enough for your body to lose weight, but if you are going to eat dozen donuts everyday, that is not going to help your health either. Are intermittent fasting diets healthy?- as I already mentioned, eating too much junk food everyday paired with IF is not healthy at all. Here are my tips on how to make your intermittent fasting even healthier:
- Try to eat unprocessed food at all times.
- Eat a balanced diet: include veggies, proteins, fruits, carbs and healthy fats.
- If you can not say no to sweets and burgers, then it is alright to eat them occasionally, in moderation.
- Eat your meals slowly, so you do not over-eat.
